This week on Dialogos Radio and the Dialogos Interview Series, we will present a special musical dedication and interview featuring the rembetiko music band Rembet Asker. Rembetiko is a style of music created by Greece’s urban poor in the early 20th century which has been described as “Greek blues.” In this week’s broadcast, we will feature several songs by the band, plus an interview with Rembet Asker’s lead singer, Christina Bethani, who will talk about the band and its music, their extensive research into the history and origins of rembetiko, the unique musical properties of rembetiko, and the modern-day significance of this music.

This week on our program, tune in to hear two special features which you absolutely will not want to miss! As part of this week’s Dialogos Interview Series, we will focus on a recent study-abroad program which brought several American college students to Greece for one month of studying and excursions. We had the opportunity to speak with the students who participated in this unique program about their experiences and impressions from Greece, and we also had the opportunity to interview the two professors who organized this program, Nikos Alexiou of Queens College in New York City, and Dimitrios Apostolidis of the Hellenic American College in Athens. The two professors spoke about this study abroad program that they helped organized and which was sponsored by their respective universities, about the importance of such programs for restoring Greece’s international image, and they also discussed issues pertaining to education, Greek culture, national identity, and immigration. Additionally, they also discussed the various academic programs that are offered by the Hellenic American University to Greek and foreign students.
In addition, on this week’s broadcast we will launch our new radio feature, Portes Magazine Exclusives, which is produced in conjunction with the editorial staff of Portes Magazine, a Greek-American magazine which opens doors to the worldwide Greek community. This feature will air regularly on our program and will present interviews and other content from the magazine, pertaining to Greek culture, notable Greek personalities, and the Greek diaspora. In this week’s debut, Portes Magazine Exclusives and its editors, Vasiliki and Anthe Mitrakos, will feature a new Greek start-up which is attempting to make a difference in the field of volunteerism in Greece and abroad.

This week on Dialogos Radio and the Dialogos Interview Series, we will be featuring an interview with the Greek-American writer and filmmaker Elias Kulukundis, author of “The Amorgos Conspiracy,” among other books. Elias will talk about his life and experiences growing up amongst three different worlds, about his writing and filmmaking, will offer some commentary on the present-day situation in Greece, and will talk about his experiences working in the world of shipping.

Dialogos Radio is excited to announce a new on-air collaboration which it will soon be launching with the Greek-American publication Portes Magazine. Soon, we will begin airing special mini-features on our broadcasts which will be produced by the Portes Magazine editorial staff, and which will be based on content from the magazine, featuring news and achievements in the realm of Greek culture, travel, food, fashion, and more. These features will be broadcast on our weekly programs, and will also be made available as part of our podcast. We are excited to announce the expansion of Dialogos Radio’s broadcast network, with the addition of Hellenic Radio 1422 AM, which will begin airing our weekly Greek-language broadcasts each Thursday, from 1-2 pm local time, beginning Thursday, January 9! Based in Johannesburg, Hellenic Radio is South Africa’s only 24/7 Greek radio station, on the air since 1995 with programming for Johannesburg’s large Greek community.
Our broadcasts on Hellenic Radio begin on January 9 with one of the best programs from our archive, featuring our interview with the world-renowned athlete and “Ultramarathon Man” Dean Karnazes, and will continue again next week with another program from our archive. New broadcasts will begin on January 23, and we will soon be posting updates regarding the interviews and features we will air, on our website and our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Hellenic Radio becomes the seventh station to join the growing Dialogos Radio network, which now spans four continents. We look forward to welcoming the Greek community of South Africa to the growing community of Dialogos Radio listeners!

Three fresh new podcasts are now available from Dialogos Radio, and all of them are dedicated to the Greek government’s recent sudden and undemocratic shutdown of ERT, Greece’s national public broadcaster. The three podcasts include:
- Our special radio broadcast from June 20th, devoted in its entirety to ERT’s shutdown and containing seven interviews with ERT journalists, staff, and the general secretary of Reporters Without Borders.
- Our recent radio appearance on Athens-based community radio station radiobubble, where we discussed the shutdown of ERT and the real reasons the government acted so urgently in shutting down ERT.
- Our recent interview on WUSB’s “Lunch on Thursday” program, where we were interviewed on the shutdown of ERT and the latest economic, political, and social conditions in Greece.
